Dr. Lawson grew up in York, Pennsylvania with his mother, father, and younger brother. He attended Purdue University for his undergraduate studies as a biology major so he could go on to do research. After a while, he decided that biology was not for him and then decided to go into veterinary medicine.
Purdue opened their veterinary school one year before Dr. Lawson was set to graduate, but because Purdue was not accepting applicants from other states for their veterinary program, he applied to the University of Pennsylvania and was accepted. He then went on to graduate in 1975.
Dr. Lawson met his wife, Judy, through mutual relatives while she was working as a nurse at the University of North Carolina's hospital. They married in 1976 and he followed Judy down to South Carolina where her parents were living at the time.He practiced for a short time with another veterinarian in Columbia but eventually opened up his own practice in March of 1977. Dr. & Mrs. Lawson had 5 children (Eric, Beth, Todd, Rebecca & Meghan) and now have 6 grandchildren (Talyn, Devin, Kurt, Olivia, Austin & Allie). They also have 3 pugs at home (Clyde, Jillie & Penny).
